Certified copies of all marriage licenses are obtained from the registrar in the municipality where the ceremony took place and fees vary from $5 to $20 per copy, depending on the municipality. Officiants are required to send the original, completed license (signed by the Officiant and 2 witnesses, 18 years or older) to the municipal registrar within 5 business days of the ceremony. Be sure to submit your "completed application" for a certified copy of your license to the appropriate municipal office with the appropriate fee made payable to the municipality. Certified copies are required by Motor Vehicle Commission, Social Security Administration and other governmental agencies before name changes are permitted on certain documents and licenses.
NOTE: It is a good idea to retain a certified copy of your license to be stored in the marital home with other important papers!
